About Kobe

This area covers Kobe’s Chuo Ward, focusing on port commerce, foreign settlement, civic culture, and post-disaster redevelopment.
In the late 19th century, the opening of Kobe Port brought foreign merchants and consulates that organized the coastal settlement and hillside residences for trade and administration. By the early 20th century, trading companies and shipping offices concentrated downtown as municipal services and media outlets formed a civic center. After World War II, port expansion and urban growth culminated in large public works such as Port Island, relocating industry and research onto reclaimed land. After 1995, reconstruction programs reshaped planning and public space along the harbor, with projects at Meriken Park structuring memorial uses and waterfront access.
